Plans for Cambridgeshire eco-town in danger as Wellcome Trust refuses to sell land

Plans for an eco-town in Cambridgeshire are in danger. The eco-town planned for the Hanley Grange site is in serious doubt after the Wellcome Trust said it would not sell its share of the land involved.

The Wellcome Trust owns about one third of the land involved in the Cambridgeshire Hanley Grange eco-town site. The East Anglian eco-town near the villages of Hinxton and Duxford is now on hold as the government waits to hear back from developers, reports The Guardian.

Jarrow Investments, financed by Tesco, said it was "naturally disappointed" but it was "looking at options for moving forward" using just its land. If a decision is made to withdraw plans for the Hanley Grange eco-town, the government would be left with just 12 of the original 15 sites on the shortlist, from which they will pick between five and 10 to develop.

The Wellcome Trust would not say why it had decided not to sell its 270 acres for the eco-town but said that it had given "very serious consideration" to an offer from Jarrow Investments.

There has been strong opposition to Hanley Grange scheme from local residents and MPs as well as the local company Cambridgeshire Horizons. Opponents claimed that Hanley Grange would jeapordise the future of another new town at Northstowe, under 15 miles away.
