Syria 'a holiday destination packed with history'
Syria 'a holiday destination packed with history'Syria is increasingly popular with European tourists looking for a holiday rich in history, it has been claimed.

According to figures released by the country's government, visitor numbers have increased by 23 per cent in the first quarter of 2008, the BBC reports.

Speaking to the news provider, Andrew Hunt, spokesperson for Audley Travel, explained that the nation attracts both holidaymakers and investment.

He said: "It has a very strong historical bent - more so than anywhere else - and a lot of Gulf Arab money has been channelled into the country."

Mr Hunt added that there is strong demand among western tourists and, according Syrian news agency Sana, visitors from Italy, the Netherlands and the UK seem particularly keen to experience the country.

However, while the country does offer much to those interested in history and culture, Mr Hunt believes that neighbouring Jordan will remain more popular due to its greater level of "diversity".

Syria is home to a number of archaeological sites, including the ancient city of Ebla.
