Spain's El Bulli named best restaurant in the world

El Bulli, the Costa Brava restaurant, has been named the best in the world for the fourth year running. The 2009 San Pellegrino restaurant awards took place in London earlier this week, naming the world's top 100 restaurants.
In total, four Spanish restaurants featured in
San Pellegrino's top 10. Chef Ferran Adrià's El Bulli in
Roses on the
Costa Blanca took top place, but the Basque Country's Mugaritz (in San Sebastián) came fourth, while El Celler de Can Roca in
Girona was placed fifth and Arzak, also in San Sebastián was eighth.
Travellers wanting a gastronomic experience should also consider
UK holidays.
The Fat Duck restaurant in Bray,
Berkshire was named the second best restaurant in the world for the second year in a row. Run by chef Heston Blumenthal, The Fat Duck took first place in 2001.
London could also be considered a foodie destination - St John (14th), Nobu (34th) and Hakkasan (36th) all made it into the top 50.
The
US also featured heavily, with seven restaurants named in the top 50.
France and
Italy claimed nine and six respectively.
According to The Times, the rankings are determined by a team of
806 judges and are published in Restaurant magazine. The British press expressed surprise that none of chef Gordon Ramsay's restaurants featured in San Pellegrino's top 100.
Commenting on Ramsay's absence, the magazine's editor, Paul Wootton, said: "It does seem to be a bit of an anomaly and I can't tell you for sure why some voters have chosen not to vote for
Gordon Ramsay this year. I think there may be a feeling among part of the restaurant industry and the foodie fraternity that some of the superchefs with large empires of restaurants are spreading themselves too thin."
