Paris Plage open for business - city beach ready to welcome visitors
Today marks the opening of the Paris Plage; the yearly beach season in Paris kicks off today, transforming the capital city into a beach resort.
2,000 tons of sand, more than 1,000 deckchairs, 85 boats and 61 beach huts have been brought to the banks of
Paris's river Seine for 335 days of beach living in the city, reports The Guardian.
This year's
Paris Plage is said to be the biggest ever since its debut in 2002. The beach scheme in Paris now involves more free activities, more palm trees (950 in a single square), more concerts, more sand, and it is being launched in more Parisian locations.
Sand, fun and games can now be found in waterside areas in the north-east of Paris, and along three canals into the Parisian suburbs. The Paris Plage was originally only on the Right Bank of the Seine.
The
Paris beach scheme has continually grown in popularity. It was originally meant to bring the beach to those who can't afford summer holidays, and as an attraction for the millions of tourists who visit the city each year, including many who take advantage of staying in
holiday homes in Paris.
The 2003 heat wave made it a permanent fixture; three million tourists visited and enjoyed activities such as petanque, dancing, and sculpture workshops as well as cafes and ice cream stalls.
