New flights to Palanga highlight Lithuania's charms
New flights to Palanga highlight Lithuania's charmsNew direct flights are opening up an as yet unknown destination on the tourist map. Lithuania's "summer capital", Palanga, could be the best bet for some fun in the sun, according to The Observer.

Palanga, a "resurgent, defiant and youthful" town, reflects modern day Lithuania and, like the country generally, is a well-kept secret. While many European countries suffer from the pound's weakness against the euro, one of the attractions of Lithuania is its prices, which remain low. Now, thanks to new, twice-weekly flights from London Stansted to the town, Palanga is set to blossom.

Palanga itself is the "summer jewel in the country's crown", dormant in winter and coming to life from late-May onwards. During the summer months, the town is transformed into a popular beach resort and is helping Lithuania to catch up with its Baltic compatriots, Latvia and Estonia, in tourism terms. A chocolate-box town, full of brightly coloured log-cabins, Palanga feels as if it "belongs to another era", with an air of "quaint innocence" pervading. The town is not short of attractions; miles of white sands, crystal waters, a good nightlife and plenty of excellent food should all help to draw in the crowds.

Palanga, part of the country's 'Amber Coast', could well be a sign of things to come; it is thought the Lithuanian Airlines flights to the town, could be the start of a bigger tourism campaign.
