Lap up the aquatic attractions of Zaragoza
One of Spain's largest cities is undergoing an "extraordinary renaissance", according to The Times. Zaragoza in the community of Aragon is thriving as the host of Expo 2008.
Bordering
Catalonia and the
Costa Dorada region, the ancient capital of
Aragon is hoping to attract six million visitors throughout its stint as the host of this summer's water-themed Expo 2008. After arriving at the city's new AVE high-speed train station, visitors can take their seat on a ski-resort style gondola and be transported to the Expo site, sitting on a meander of the River Ebro.
Once at the site, a futuristic looking bridge carries visitors over the river to "mesmerising" architecture. Guests then have plenty to keep them entertained; boating on an artificial lake; water-flumes; daily performances from Cirque de Soleil's "aquabats"; evening music concerts on an aquatic theme, such as Handel's Water Music; and exhibitions and demonstrations from more than 100 nations.
Zaragoza itself also holds attractions for holidaymakers. Dazzling new buildings sit alongside the "resurgent old town", which is buzzing with activity, and, being a university town, there are great tapas bars waiting to be discovered.
