First 'living statues' for Trafalgar Square project chosen

July's 'living statues' for London's Trafalgar Square have been chosen. Over 13,000 people applied to be part of a project that will see members of the public standing on Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth.

Each living statue will take to the plinth for an hour, reports The BBC. The One and Other project, created by artist Antony Gormley, will begin on July 6 and 615 people will take part during its first month.

Visitors renting apartments in London will be able to see the project until October 14. A further 2,400 participants will be announced at later dates - August's living statues will be selected on July 1 and applications will be accepted until September 1, when the final participants will be announced.

July's participants plan to put their hours to good use. David Roseburg from London wants to take to the plinth at night, when he will pedal his pink folding bike and generate energy to light up a specially created suit he will be wearing.

The project's oldest living statue, 83 year old Gwynneth Pedler, plans to signal with semaphore flags. Student Heather Pringle will celebrate her 20th birthday on the plinth with a "good old fashioned birthday party", promising cake for those visiting.
