Ecuador sets out sustainable stall
Ecuador sets out sustainable stallEcuador is launching a sustainable tourism development plan, with the aim of doubling visitor numbers by 2020.

The plan is being launched at World Travel Market 2007, a global industry expo, taking place at London’s ExCel conference centre this week.

Ecuador, running down from the Andes in the east to the Pacific coast in the north-east corner of South America, is a unique holiday destination with some of the most diverse and important ecological sites in the world.

The new plan, Plandetur 2020, will focus on the jewels in Ecuador’s crown – the Galapagos, the Pacific coastline, the Andes and the Amazon.

Ecuador Tourism executive director Patricio Tamariz said: "Plandetur 2020 will allow Ecuador to develop as a mainstream brand and become a leader in sustainable tourism, offering authentic and unique experiences that are tied to Ecuador's natural and cultural resources."

The plan is being co-sponsored by the government of Spain and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Spaniard made up nearly 33,000 of the 118,000 European who visited Ecuador in 2006.
