Central America beckons visitors

Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras and Colombia - neglected by tourists in the past - will be the hot new destinations in 2008, according to responsibletravel.com

The eco-tourism website believes that these destinations will see a significant increase in demand next year as more people look to get off the beaten track.

Blogging on the company’s website Justin Francis Lewes, co-founder and managing director of the company said: "We have already seen a remarkable 259 per cent increase this year in the number of enquiries through responsibletravel.com for holidays and places to stay in Nicaragua, compared to last year. Guatemala too has grown by 92 per cent and Honduras by 69 per cent."

Mr Francis Lewes also said that he thought other destinations such as Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Bolivia will continue to rise in popularity.

He added that with its large variety of wildlife, Madagascar would also prove a prime destination in coming years.

Nicaragua sits just north of the equator with the Pacific Ocean on its west coast and the Caribbean Sea on its east.

A former colony of Spain, the country has evidence of inhabitation dating back as long as 6,000 years ago.
