Boost for golf in Scotland: St Andrews claims four of world's top 100 courses
Boost for golf in Scotland: St Andrews claims four of world's top 100 courses

A new list of the world's top 100 golf courses includes four in St Andrews. Overall, Scotland has 17 golf courses included in Golf Digest's top 100 courses outside of the US.
The news cements the town's reputation as the home of golf, according to The Scotsman. The Old Course in St Andrews was ranked second and is a popular choice for those wanting to play
golf in Scotland.
St Andrews' golf opportunities also include the New Course (in 63rd place), the Castle Course (in 65th place) and the Jubilee Course (in 92nd place). Describing the golf in the town, Golf Digest said that St Andrews "aspires to honour the game as it evolved".
Other Scottish golf courses included in the top 100 are
Loch Lomand,
Royal Troon,
Royal Aberdeen and Muirfeld, near
Edinburgh. Kingsbarns Golf Links just outside of St Andrews also ranked highly.
"It does not get better than this," said golf expert Malcolm Campbell. "Golf Digest is a very highly respected journal. It is understandable that four of the
St Andrews courses are in the top 100. It is great news for Scotland and is confirmation that links golf is gaining in popularity."
Forty two of the top 100 courses are in the British Isles, with
Royal County Down in
Northern Ireland securing top place. Commenting on the result, Campbell said: "It is understandable that the Royal County Down would always feature in a top five. It's very popular with the Americans - it's very scenic. But I would always make the Old Course number one in any listing."
