'China's Hawaii' courts overseas visitorsThree new airports are planned for the tropical island of Hainan, it has been claimed.

China View reports that plans for a new airport on the east coast of the province have recently been approved, with two others already set for the island.

When the new projects are completed, the island will be home to a total of five airports, something that should help in its attempts to boost the number of people visiting from overseas.

Last week, Reuters reported that Hainan, which styles itself as China's Hawaii, was visited by 18 million domestic tourists in 2007, but only 750,000 from other countries.

Speaking to the news provider, Wei Liucheng, the island's senior Communist Party representative, explained that while the infrastructure on the island is currently poor in some areas, the destination hopes to compete with resorts in places such as Thailand and other traditional holiday spots.

He said: "I think that in places like Sanya [Hainan's main beach resort], the facilities and scenery match up well to Phuket, Bali or Hawaii."

Hainan is located in the South China Sea and enjoys average temperatures of between 25 and 29 degrees centigrade during July and August.
