Madonna buys New York townhouse & plans return to Malawi
Madonna has bought a London style townhouse in New York. Madonna, who recently failed in her bid to adopt a child- Mercy James- from Malawi, paid less than the asking price for the property.

The singer paid approximately $40m for the four story property, according to the New York Post. The sum is thought to be around $5m under the asking price.

"The townhouse is perfect for Madonna," a source told the paper. "She's trying to recreate London in New York City and this is in the style of a London townhouse."

The 26 room property has 13 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, a wine cellar with grotto, nine fireplaces and a lift. Outside, Madonna's New York home has a large garden and a two car garage.

Before Madonna moves in she plans extensive renovations. This includes security upgrades. Although she has just signed the contract for the New York property, the singer is still house hunting. She is believed to be looking for an English style home on Long Island or in Westchester, New York.

Madonna had previously said she would move to Malawi after a judge in the country ruled she could not adopt four year old Mercy. The singer was told the adoption was rejected as she had not lived in Malawi for the required 18 months.

Despite the setback, Madonna is planning to return to Malawi. "Madonna has a big beautiful plot of land over there already," a source told The Sun. "She's planning to build a girls' school. But she's gone back to the designers and asked if they could accommodate a family home on the plot or on adjacent land."
