Vodafone drops 'roaming' charges for using phones abroad

Vodafone has scrapped its 'roaming' charges for customers using their mobile phones abroad. Vodafone's 'Passport' users will pay the same price overseas as they do at home during the peak summer holiday season.

Normally, anyone using the Vodafone Passport service has to pay a 75p connection charge in order to take advantage of domestic rates when abroad or have the calls and texts included in their contract package. However, from June 1 until the end of August this charge will be scrapped.

Under the deal, customers will be able to make phone calls, text and send picture messages from over 35 countries without incurring any extra charges. According to The Daily Telegraph, customers who don't use services such as Vodafone's Passport can unwittingly end up with bills of hundreds of pounds when using their phones abroad.

If it proves popular, Vodafone may extend this offer or introduce similar initiatives. It is also thought that it will put pressure on other mobile phone operators to abolish their roaming charges. Vodafone also announced that it has reduced the cost of making international calls from a pay-as-you-go phone.

Vodafone's decision follows a ruling by the European Commission (EC) to reduce the cost of using a mobile phone overseas. From July 1, the cost of texting, making voice calls and downloading data will be capped.
