Swine flu: travel insurance advice
Travel insurance will typically cover policy holders for swine flu. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is assuring travellers that insurance companied will treat swine flu no differently from any other illness.

"While the outbreak of swine flu is causing concern, people should not overreact or panic," said the ABI's Nick Starling. The ABI has issued the following advice for travellers:

The cost of medical treatment abroad if travellers contract swine flu while on holiday will typically be covered by travel insurance. Policy holders should also be covered for the cost of rearranged flights and accommodation.

Policies should also cover the cost of rearranged flights if airlines deem passengers medically unfit to travel. In order to validate a claim, customers will need written confirmation from the airline in question's medical advisers that they are unfit to travel.

Should a policy holder contract swine flu abroad and is put in quarantine, having to stay beyond their planned departure date, the costs of accommodation and rearranged flights should be covered by travel insurance. However, those who are quarantined as a precautionary measure may not be covered - insurers will consider claims on an individual basis.
