Swine flu: FCO advises against all but essential travel to Mexico

The Foreign Office (FCO) has amended its travel advice for Mexico following the outbreak of swine flu. It is now advising Britons against all but essential travel to the country.

The FCO's advice follows the news that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to level four. This indicates that there is evidence of increased human to human transmission.

Britons in Mexico should be aware that routine consular and all visa services have been suspended at the British Embassy in Mexico City until further notice. British nationals with a urgent consular issues should phone the Embassy on (01 55) 5242 8500 for assistance.

Those in the country are also being advised that they "may wish to consider whether they should remain in Mexico at this time". Anyone in Mexico should continue to follow local advice on precautions to take in order to avoid exposure to the swine flu virus. Anyone displaying flu like symptoms should contact a doctor immediately.

Museums and public venues have been closed throughout Mexico. Events due to take place have also been postponed.

It is being widely reported that the total number of deaths from swine flu in Mexico has now risen to over 150. The first two cases of swine flu in Britain have also been confirmed - a Scottish couple returning from their honeymoon in Cancun are said to be recovering well.
