Sicily mudslide: Messina hit by heavy rains
A deadly mudslide has hit Sicily. At least six people have died after mudslides in the city of Messina.

Rivers of mud were caused by heavy rains in Messina, reports the Associated Press. In addition to the six deaths, several more people have been reported missing to Italian authorities.

The Sicily mudslides swept away cars and led to several buildings collapsing. More than 100 people were forced to evacuate their homes and at least 15 were injured.

The government in Rome has declared a state of emergency, while rescuers and sniffer dogs are searching for those reported missing. However, the mud has cut off many roads and railways, hampering efforts.

The mud swept down from the surrounding hills and cliffs into Messina. In some places the mud and debris reached door handles on cars and houses.
