Rome's Colosseum needs urgent restoration

Rome's Colosseum needs almost £5m of restoration work. The Italian government has said that parts of the structure are crumbling away.

Restoring the Colosseum is expected to cost at least £4.5m, reports The Daily Telegraph. The amphitheatre, popular with those renting Rome apartments, attracts over four million visitors per year.

However, Rome's mayor, Gianno Alemmano, said that "a huge intervention" is needed to save the structure. The government's undersecretary for culture and heritage, Francesco Giro, explained that "some bits of it are falling off" and that the gladiatorial arena needs "immediate restoration".

Rome is now calling for international sponsors to help fund the project. Restoring the Colosseum is part of a larger plan to improve the nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The entire restoration of the ruined temples and palaces will cost at least £35m.
