More compensation for lost luggage
More compensation for lost luggage
Airline passengers are set to get more compensation for lost luggage from next year. Plans drawn up by the United Nations (UN) will see a 13.1 per cent increase in the amount of compensation passengers can claim.

Under the new arrangements, passengers will be able to claim up to £1,060.48. The upper limit currently stands at £972.80, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Recent figures show that 32 million bags were "mishandled" in 2008. 98 per cent of bags eventually find their way back to their rightful owners.

However, many passengers end up losing money as they need to buy replacement items. This is a particular problem for travellers just arriving at their holiday destination rather than returning home.

The news of increased compensation has been well received by the Air Transport Users' Council: "It is something we welcome," a spokesman told the paper. "Although in our experience few people do actually get the full amount of compensation. While a lot of people do have insurance, we still get hundreds of complaints a year."
