Los Angeles forest fires out of control
Fires in Los Angeles are burning out of control. Firefighters are trying to tackle the blazes on the outskirts of the city.

164 square miles of hillsides are now covered by eight fires, reports The Daily Telegraph. The five-day old fires have trebled in size in the past three days and officials fear they won't be under control until September 15.

"The fire is headed just about anywhere it wants to," said Los Angeles County Fire deputy chief, Mike Dietrich. "It is going east, north east and east, and it might go west too. This is a very angry fire. Until we get a change in the weather conditions, I am not overly optimistic." Officials are reminding the public to act on warnings after three people suffered serious burns when they ignored evacuation orders.

According to The Times, 10,000 homes are threatened by the fires. More than 1,800 firefighters are battling the flames in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Suburbs affected by the flames include La Canada Flintridge, Glendale and Big Tujunga Canyon.
