Greyhound buses coming to the UK
Greyhound buses coming to the UK
Greyhound buses are coming to the UK. The iconic American coaches will begin operating in England in September.

A fleet of Greyhound coaches will start services on September 14. Travellers arriving in London will be able to connect to ferry services for their Isle of Wight holidays from Southampton and Portsmouth using the Greyhound coaches.

Fares will start from just £1.50 one way, which includes a 50p booking fee. The coaches will have leather seats, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and passengers will be offered free newspapers. At under two hours per non-stop journey, holidaymakers renting apartments in London could use the services for day trips to the seaside towns.

Rather than the distinctive grey buses, FirstGroup - the company bringing the Greyhounds to the UK - is introducing a fleet of modern coaches. The vehicles will be named after women in popular American songs, such as Peggy Sue, Sweet Caroline and Barbara Ann.

FirstGroup hopes to add more Greyhound destinations in 2010. The company is confident of the Greyhound's success - market research carried out by FirstGroup indicated that almost 50 per cent of rail passengers and 73 per cent of coach passengers would be willing to try a new service based on the Greyhound model.
