First recipients of 'Sea Change' initiative announced - Blackpool, Dover and Torbay to benefit
Details of the first phase of the government's 'Sea Change' initiative have been announced. The redevelopment of Britain's seaside resorts will start with a £10m investment in Blackpool, Torbay and Dover.
Under the
Sea Change scheme £10m will be invested in cultural and heritage projects in
Blackpool, the bay of Torbay in
Devon, and
Dover, reports The Telegraph.
Blackpool will receive £4m, which will help fund a sea-front 20,000-capacity outdoor arena that will be used for music and dance festivals.
Dover will be given £3.8m to build a cable car linking the town's Western Docks and the cliff-top castle. Meanwhile,
Torbay has been awarded £2.2m of government money to fund two projects; the money will be invested in the English Riviera Geopark, including the construction of an 'innovation centre' in the historic thatched village of Cockington.

VisitBritain welcomes the Sea Change initiative: "The regeneration of
Britain's seaside is vital, as it has suffered in the past due to the popularity of European destinations and the rise of low-cost airlines."
Overall the Sea Change project will see the government invest £45m in Britain's coastal towns over the next three years.
