Europe's first artificial reef being installed in Bournemouth
Europe's first artificial reef is being installed off the south coast of Britain. It is thought that the artificial reef could double the size of the waves.
The £2.6m artificial reef, the first of its kind in Europe, is being put in off the shore of
Bournemouth, reports Independent Television News. When completed, the
artificial reef will be the size of a football pitch.
The first section of the base has already been attached to the seabed using sandbags and it is hoped that once the rest has been fitted it will work like a real reef and push the swell upwards.
"From the land you won't see very much at all, unless there is surf and then you will see a nice wave breaking. If you come out on flat days you will be able to snorkel around the reef," explained David Nelson, who is in charge of the team installing the artificial reef.
It has taken 10 years for the reef to be constructed and it is due to be in operation by next summer.
