Death toll rises as severe flooding hits the Philippines
Severe flooding has hit the Philippines following Tropical Storm Ketsana. At least 240 people are believed to have died in the floods and hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
More heavy rain is forecast for the Philippines later this week, reports The BBC. The country is currently experiencing the worst flooding in over 40 years after more than 40cm of rain fell on Manila in just 12 hours, exceeding the monthly average.
The death toll is expected to rise further in Manila, where more than 90 fatalities have already been recorded. Bodies continue to be pulled from the mud and rivers.
More than 7,900 people have so far been rescued by army troops, the police and volunteers. The presidential palace has been opened to survivors to receive food and shelter. Some 240,000 people have been displaced.
The Philippines is appealing to the international community for further aid, fearing the situation will get worse. Experts say that the country is overwhelmed and resources are spread too thinly.
