Chessington power cut leaves visitors stranded over lion enclosure
Visitors to Chessington World of Adventures were stuck above a lion enclosure when the ride they were on broke down yesterday. Holidaymakers on all rides were stranded for up to two hours after a power cut at the theme park.

Around 50 people were stuck on the Safari Skyride monorail when it came to a halt 20 feet above a lion enclosure. Others were suspended at a 40 degree angle on the Rameses Revenge ride, one visitor told The Daily Mail.

The park evacuated all visitors, but some people were stuck on the rides for up to two hours before they could be rescued. Police were also called in to deal with angry visitors whose day was cut short.

Rescuers had to climb to the top of trees to free those trapped, while a cherry picker was used in one instance to reach some of those affected. Some children were described as "hysterical" after being trapped on the rides.

Since the park was closed following the incident, people forced to leave were given complimentary tickets for a future visit. A spokesman for the park stressed that the health and safety of guests is its "primary objective" and guests were at no time put at any risk.

It is still not known what caused the power cut, but an investigation is underway. Yesterday's power cut was the second to hit the park in three days - rides were evacuated after a power failure on Saturday.
