British tourists killed in France

Three Britons have been killed in a head-on collision after driving on the wrong side of a French road.

Two couples, one English and one from Ireland, were sightseeing in a Volvo 4x4 when the collision occurred on Monday morning. The accident happened near the town of Foix, south of Toulouse, reports the Daily Mail.

Police estimate that the 19-tonne HGV lorry which hit them was travelling at less than 20 mph as it slowed down to try and avoid them.

According to a spokesman for Foix Gendarmerie, the lorry driver was all but unhurt, while the British man driving the Volvo also escaped with very minor injuries. The police spokesman also confirmed that two of the people in the car died straight away, while the third died on the way to hospital. Police have refused to release the names of the victims until the next of kin have been informed.

The accident took place at around 2.15pm on an A-road at the town of Ornolac-Ussat-les-Bains, in the Ariege region of Southern France, which is very popular with British holidaymakers and expatriates alike.

The criminal brigade of Tarascon-sur-Ariege has opened an enquiry into the accident.
