Border control staff issue strike action threat
Strikes at UK airports are possible this summer. Border control staff at air and sea ports are considering industrial action over working conditions.
4,100 immigration officials could stage a two day walkout, according to The Daily Telegraph. Workers are unhappy about the merging of customs and immigration controls into one body, the UK Border Agency.
Two unions are currently considering industrial action at the same time. Staff could begin a two day strike on August 5 and further action has not been ruled out. If both unions do walk out together, the UK would be left without proper immigration controls for the first time since 1981.
The Home Office claims that minimal disruption would be caused in the event of a double strike. A spokeswoman also said that industrial action was by no means definite.
However, Alex Flynn from the Public and Commercial Services Union, one of bodies involved in the dispute, disagrees: Whatever contingency plans they have, you would be looking at long delays for people coming into ports of entry and going through immigration controls," he said.
