Big Dipper crash at Blackpool Pleasure Beach
Big Dipper crash at Blackpool Pleasure Beach
About 20 people were injured following a crash on the Big Dipper rollercoaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach yesterday. Two cars collided on the track at around 7.45pm last night.

32 riders were on the rollercoaster and up to 21 "walking wounded" were taken to hospital following the Big Dipper crash, reports the BBC. The rollercoaster cars collided and came to rest about six metres off the ground. It is believed that one of the cars was jammed on the rails, causing the second carriage to crash into it.

A number of passengers suffered whiplash, broken bones and back injuries. A specialist rope team was employed to rescue people from the ride. The Big Dipper is now closed while an investigation is underway.

The ride was built in 1921, but was not considered unsafe: "It may be an old ride, but that does not mean it is not safe," said Ian Bell, a rollercoaster specialist. "The older [they are], the more the checks they have. It certainly won't stop me from going on it."
