Benidorm 'an eco-tourism destination'
Benidorm 'an eco-tourism destination'The mention of eco-tourism might conjure up images of tropical rainforest or even Antarctica, but environmentally-friendly tourism can be found a lot closer to home, it has been claimed.

Benidorm in Spain, more usually associated with high-rise developments, is now being touted as a green destination, the BBC reports.

Speaking to the news provider, Gemma Roberts, a "self-confessed eco-geek" and holidaymaker, explained that small things, like low energy lights on the promenade or the large number of recycling bins, combine to make the resort a good choice for the eco-conscious holidaymaker.

Ms Roberts said: "I was expecting to arrive in a very developed, built-up area that would be doing absolutely nothing towards looking after the natural environment.

"I've been really pleasantly surprised by lots of small things that are going on within the resort itself."

The fact that lots of the food available in Benidorm is locally sourced and people can walk almost everywhere helps make it even more eco-friendly, she added.

Last month, writing for the Daily Telegraph, Graham Boynton stated that green tourism is now a must and urged travellers to reduce the impact they have on the environment.
