Airport and ferry port strikes likely next week
Airport strikes are likely to go ahead next Wednesday. The final decision as to whether immigration officers will stage industrial action will be made on Tuesday.
Should members of the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) decide in favour of the strike, workers will walk out for 24 hours. TravelWeekly reports that 78 per cent of the union's members want industrial action.
In the event of a strike, lengthy queues for inbound passengers are possible at Britain's air and sea ports. As well as the 1,200 members of the PCS, a further 4,000 immigration officers from the Immigration Service Union (ISU) could also be balloted on industrial action next week. Support from the ISU is said to be running at 77 per cent in favour of striking.
The dispute concerns the government's decision to bring customs and immigration services together under the UK Border Agency. Unions say that immigration officers will be forced to carry out the duties of custom officials, which could include strip searches and making arrests.
