'The great English pub' scoops outstanding contribution to tourism award
The English pub has been honoured for its contribution to the country's tourism industry. The Enjoy England Awards for Excellence took place yesterday, St George's Day, at the National Railway Museum in York.

The "great English pub" walked away with the award for outstanding contribution to tourism at last night's event, reports The Guardian. Organised by VisitBritain, the awards showcased "some of England's best kept secrets," said Lady Cobham, the organisation's chairperson.

Tourists renting a cottage in England should include a visit to the traditional pub, which plays an integral part "in the fabric of the English way of life". Being such a staple in English communities, pubs provide "the opportunity...for domestic and international visitors to meet local people and enjoy local food and drink", VisitBritain said.

The organisation said that its research showed that many overseas visitors are keen to visit a pub during their holidays in England. However, the paper argues that the pub industry is "in a dire state, being squeezed by the recession, the smoking ban...taxation...and soaring operating costs".

Awards were also handed out for the best small and large visitor attractions of the year. These went to 78 Derngate - the Charles Rennie Mackintosh House and Galleries in Northampton - and Harewood House in Leeds respectively. Meanwhile The London Walks, which operates over 400 walking tours in the city, took the award for best tourism experience of the year.
