A man took a knife through airport security, but only got stopped for carrying a bottle of water. Adrian Elvy was travelling from Bristol Airport to Barcelona when he accidentally carried a six inch knife through in his luggage.

The Clipper yachting knife had a serrated edge and a three inch spike, according to The Daily Telegraph. Elvy uses the knife to open boxes in the warehouse of his company.

Elvy, who was travelling to Barcelona on business, was stopped by baggage checkers before he boarded his flight, but only because they spotted a bottle of water in his bag. Shortly before he got on the plane, Elvy realised that the knife was still in his bag.

"I went over to a policeman and told him that I had a knife accidentally in my luggage," he said. "The knife is all metal and was in the side pocket of the bag, so must have been visible. I don't know how they missed it."

Elvy described the policeman as "gobsmacked" and was asked which X-ray scanner he had been through. "It's quite worrying when you think about the security checks there are supposed to be these days and they can't even spot a dangerous blade like this."

The knife was taken off Elvy, who collected it from Bristol Airport upon his return from Spain. The situation, he concluded, was "ludicrous".

The airport refused to comment on the specific case and would only "confirm that the security process for detection is continually monitored and subject to audit from the Department of Transport". The spokesman added that an internal investigation would be undertaken to ensure that procedures were being followed correctly.
