Holidaymakers trying to get a glimpse of George Clooney in Italy now risk being fined. The mayor of Laglio, the Lake Como community where Clooney owns a home, is fed up of autograph hunters and the paparazzi.

From now on, groups of more than three people are forbidden from gathering outside Clooney's Villa Oleandra. Tourists renting villas in Italy will have to pay 19 euros if caught contravening the regulation, according to The Independent.

Interest in Clooney has surged in the past fortnight after his relationship with the Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis came to light. The couple have been seen in and around the Lake Como area and fans have been arriving en-masse to see for themselves.

"We've arrived at the point when hordes of people are yelling his name from the street at the top of their voices," said Giogio Pozzi, Laglio's mayor. "Some of the cheekier ones are even going up and ringing the bell."

The fine has been introduced following complaints from neighbours, added Pozzi: "Notification of what was happening came from the public, not Clooney." The actor is said to be treated like royalty in Italy.

Fans will be fined 19 euros in the first instance, but "repeat offenders" will face a steeper levy. Local residents are exempt from the new rules.
