Everyone flying into Britain could be offered a free cup of tea and a biscuit in a plan to make the UK more cheerful. It is hoped that with the help of a cup of English Breakfast tea and a biscuit passengers will be put in a more positive frame of mind.


Waitrose's managing director, Mark Price, has persuaded BAA to trial the scheme for a week in November at Heathrow's Terminal 5, reports The Telegraph. Price hopes that by offering incoming passengers a free cup of a tea and a biscuit, gloomy thoughts of bad weather, financial problems and delayed flights will be banished.

During the week-long trial of the scheme, which has been backed by VisitBritain, 5,000 cups of tea, accompanied with a biscuit, will be given out each day in the arrivals hall. Price's aim is to have all British airports offering the traditional combination of tea and biscuits in time for the 2012 Olympics in London.

"What could be more welcoming than a cuppa and a Jammie Dodger or Garibaldi? When everyone seems so miserable about the economy, I am sure a cup of tea would put things in perspective," Price said.

However, before the trial period gets under way Waitrose needs to decide which kind of biscuit will be offered to weary travellers.

"I am very fond of a Garibaldi, or bourbon, but neither is a very good dunker," Price mused.
