British footballers dressed as nuns arrested on Crete
17British footballers were arrested in Crete whilst dressed as 'naughty nuns'. The men were on an annual trip with their football club when the incident occurred over the weekend.

Aged between 18 and 65, the men were all current or former players with Bristol's Hanham Athletic Sunday football team, according to The Guardian. The group was on an annual club holiday in Crete when the men were detained by police in the resort of Malia.

The men were wearing nuns' costumes and were accused of flashing their bottoms, which led to them being charged with "scandal and misrepresentation of a costume or uniform". They were arrested and held in cells for over 24 hours.

Explaining why they were arrested, a police official said: "They were dressed like nuns, carrying crosses, but wearing thongs under their skirts and showing people their bottoms and the rest."

Although the charges were ultimately dropped as nobody arrived to testify that the group's behaviour was offensive, the men were yesterday led into court in Heraklion, handcuffed in pairs. They had been unable to change their clothing and were still wearing their costumes.

The club's Hanham Sunday Tour was established in the 1960s. Previous years have seen members dressing up as St Trinian's schoolgirls in Portugal and babies in Cyprus.
