'Best job in the world' on offer on Hamilton Island

Tourism officials in Australia are looking for a new employee on Hamilton Island, part of the Whitsunday Islands. The successful applicant does not have to be Australian and will be paid to explore The Great Barrier Reef and promote the region.

No formal qualifications are needed for what Tourism Queensland calls 'the best job in the world'. The initiative is part of a tourism campaign to attract visitors to Queensland.

The successful candidate will be rewarded with a AU$150,000 six month contract and will live on Hamilton Island. Their work will involve travelling to other islands of the Great Barrier Reef and reporting back on their travels to a global audience via blogs, photo diaries and video updates.

Paul Lucas from Tourism Queensland said: "This campaign is about working hard to protect the AU$18bn a year that tourism generates in Queensland and the jobs that go with it. Traditional tourism advertising just doesn't cut it sometimes and we are thinking outside of the box."

Hamilton Island's new employee will need to be outgoing, Lucas continued: "They'll also have to talk to the media about what they're doing, so they can't be too shy and they'll have to love the sea, the sun and the outdoors. The fact that they will be paid to explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swim, snorkel and generally live the Queensland lifestyle makes this undoubtedly the best job in the world."

Accommodation on Hamilton Island is included in the contract, as are airfares from their home country to the island, travel insurance and a computer. Despite the novel approach, candidates will still have to undertake a genuine recruitment process.

Applications for the post are open until February 22. 11 shortlisted candidates will be flown to Hamilton Island in May for the final selection process and the six month contract will start on July 1. Potential applicants should visit islandreefjob.com.
