Ryanair has said that it will not go ahead with its 'fat tax'. However, the airline's chief executive, Michael O'Leary, has turned his attentions to a new cost cutting tactic - getting passengers to carry their own bags to the plane.

Ryanair last week confirmed that it would not be implementing its fat tax, which was suggested by its passengers. The airline said there was no way to collect the extra charge without disrupting its 25 minute turnarounds. Ryanair's online check in process also stands in the way of the fat tax.

Nevertheless, O'Leary has already spoken of his latest vision. He told The Sunday Times that he wants to miminise the need for baggage handlers and that he is in discussions with airports over letting passengers carry their own luggage to the plane. Instead of handing over large bags at the airport to be taken to the plane's hold, travellers would carry their bags through the departure gate themselves.

"You do it on trains and buses, why not on planes?," he reasoned. "It will cut out baggage complaints because you will be the only one responsible for your bags."
