London Tube and bus fares to increase in 2010
London Tube and bus fares are to increase in 2010. Boris Johnson, mayor of London, announced the fare increases today.

London apartments will have to pay more to use the city's Underground and bus system. Tube fares will rise by 3.9 per cent overall, while the cost of using London's bus network will increase by 12.7 per cent.
Announcing the fare increases, Johnson said that the city was continuing to protect free and concessionary travel for the elderly, young people and those on low incomes. However, the overall increase was necessary, he said: "Nobody wants to make an announcement like this, especially when Londoners are feeling the effects of the recession. It is not a decision that I have taken lightly."
Under the new pricing system, most pay as you go Tube and bus fares will increase by 20p using an Oyster card. The price of travelcards will be frozen although a weekly bus pass will increase from £13.80 to £16.60. According to Transport for London (TfL), the Oyster card will continue to give the best value fares.
Johnson justified the price rise saying that "the era of ever rising funding from the taxpayer is now firmly at an end". This fact would need to be taken into account when setting fares in the future, he added.
Changes to the way London's Congestion Charge Scheme were also outlined in the plans. TfL said that the new system will make it easier to pay and avoid penalty charges by introducing payment on account next year.
