Gatwick, Stansted & Manchester strikes possible over bank holiday
Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester airports could be hit by strikes this coming bank holiday weekend. Check-in staff and baggage handlers are being balloted over industrial action.

The Unite and GMB unions are balloting employees at the airports, reports The Daily Telegraph. The unions are accusing the ground services provider Swissport of failing to honour a two year pay deal for its employees.

The results of the ballots are expected in the coming days. Should the strikes go ahead, significant disruption for travellers using the airports is expected.

The unions were expecting a 2.75 per cent pay rise for its members. The agreement with Swissport was made this time last year to prevent a similar strike.

However, under the current economic conditions Swissport is refusing to pay out the money unless they can make savings elsewhere. A spokesman for the company said that any industrial action would jeopardise efforts to minimise the effects of the recession and would threaten jobs and the future prosperity of Swissport.
