BA summer strikes still possible as talks break down

British Airways (BA) is still facing strike action this summer. Talks between the airline and unions on job losses and cost cutting broke down on Tuesday night.
BA was hoping that its employees' unions would agree to 3,500 job losses, reports to The Daily Telegraph. However, the talks ended in deadlock.
It is feared that a failure to resolve the dispute could lead to a ballot on industrial action. This is likely to result in disruption for BA passengers during the peak summer period.
While the unions are thought to be willing to agree to changes on a temporary basis, BA wants permanent changes. The unions are prepared to accept the airline's proposals until the economy has improved.
Discussions between the unions and BA were due to continue yesterday. Union leaders arrived at the venue near Heathrow Airport, but BA did not attend.
According to the Press Association, BA has now called in the conciliation service ACAS to try and reach a deal with the unions. In a statement, the airline said: "It has not proved possible to conclude an agreement with the trade unions on our pay and productivity discussions...We have therefore asked the conciliation service ACAS to facilitate any future meetings."
