BA strikes possible this summer
British Airways (BA) could be hit by strikes this summer. BA wants to cut 2,000 jobs, leading to fears the airline could suffer from industrial action during the peak summer season.

BA told its 14,000 cabin crew that it is looking for 2,000 voluntary redundancies, reports The Times. The airline warned that if these cuts were not achieved, then the job losses could become compulsory.

Ground staff have already rejected changes to pay and working conditions and cabin crew are expected to follow suit. The unions representing BA's employees have said that they would accept short term changes to pay, but will not consider permanent changes. BA has set a deadline of June 30 for its employees to agree to its new terms.

A BA employee told the paper that industrial action is a probability: "BA looks as though it is heading for strikes this summer. They want to use the recession as an excuse to decimate the terms and conditions of thousands of BA's long term, loyal employees."

More than 2,500 jobs have been cut at BA in the past year. The airline's pilots have already agreed to 100 voluntary redundancies.
