About this location
The Valais region
Until recently the 15th century villages of Val d'Anniviers were mostly unknown to most and even now only a few have discovered what must be one of Switzerland's better kept secrets. Oozing with charm, with its authentic centuries old chalets and haylofts the valley enjoys excellent high altitude skiing on uncrowded slopes of which Zinal has the longest season in the valley (and for that matter one of the longest seasons in the Alps with skiing regularly available from early November). The third longest cable car in Switzerland will open this season to link the Grimentz and Zinal ski areas. The Anniviers Valley and its three skiing areas Zinal/Grimentz, St.Luc/Chandolin and Vercorin, offer 220 km of ski runs on a single ticket.
Being on the walkers version of The Haute Route (Chamonix Valley to Zermatt) there is an excellent range of summer activities in one of the most beautiful corners of Switzerland. Many of the lifts run most of the year giving easy access to walkers, cyclists, paragliders and also great picnic sites!
Zinal (1670m) is at the head of the Val d'Anniviers that stretches up from the sunniest town in Switzerland, Sierre, and it's vineyards of the Rhone Valley. The valley is the last french speaking valley (Swiss-german speaking Zermatt is the next valley east, Crans-Montanna is to the north, Verbier to the west and the Matterhorn is due south). Swiss-german is also commonly used in the valley as a second language.
Val d'Anniviers, that Zinal is the head of, is considered by many of those that know as one of the most idealic parts of Valais, if not the Swiss Alps.
At the foot of the Imperial Crown, the traditional mountaineering village of Zinal (1670m) is an idealic family and sports resort situated at the end of the magical Val d'Anniviers. Zinal is surrounded by some of the highest mountains of the alps including the Imperial Crown with its famous permanently snow covered mountains (Weisshorn [fourth highest in the Alps], Zinalrothorn, Bishorn, Obergabelhorn, Dent Blanche - all 4000m plus mountains).
Skiing and other winter sports activities:
Zinal and the other areas in the valley offer superb skiing for all levels of ski ability. The resort is extremely family friendly and is an excellent place to learn to ski or snowboard.
Zinal ski area from this winter will be connected to Grimentz with the third longest cable car in Switzerland thus further extending its appeal. The Zinal-Grimentz ski area is now the largest single lift area in the valley at 110Km. There is a total of 220Km of piste skiing in Anniviers valley all on the same lift pass. The Zinal nursery slopes, kindergarden ski area and a restaurant are conveniently located at the top end (2440m) of the cable-car out of the village. Further lifts span out from here leading to intermediate, advanced and great off piste ski possibilities at up to almost 3000m. Exceptional snow conditions of predominantly northeast facing slopes guarantee good skiing conditions through one of the longest seasons in the Alps from mid November until a fortnight after Easter. There are extensive snow cannons also covering the area. For cross country skiers there are 19km of track located in a beautiful setting next to the river, 1.5km of which is flood lit in the evening. Other activities include snow shoe walks including up to one of the local glaciers, ice climbing (some flood lit), sledging, ice-skating and paragliding.
The Zinal ski lifts run from mid November until the 27th April for the 2013/4 ski season.
Summer and autumnal sports:
These include all the traditional sports of an old mountaineering village including walking up to the many mountain cabins that you can stay in and climbing beyond for those inclined as well as paragliding and mountain bike riding with the main lifts taking the strain if preferred. There are also local public tennis courts and an indoor swimming pool.
Zinal has two well stocked supermarkets, ten restaurants, several bars, two sports shops with good quality rental gear, boulangerie, post office, newsagents, ski school, mountain guides office, nursery, and most other conveniences you may require.
