The East Carpathians region
This, the most easterly region of Slovakia is where in the past the Roman and Byzantine cultures met, even today we have two nations living side by side, Slovaks and Ruthenians, sometimes called the "lost race of europe". The result is many live traditions that can still be seen and architecture such as the wooden churches "Carpathian pearls" which are beautiful to see.
The climate is central european, cold bright winters with snow cover and warm sunny summers. The main tourist attraction is the Poloniny National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site which is adjacent to the Bieszczadski National Park in Poland. Forests cover 80% of the area with beech and beech-fir predominating. Mountain meadows are common, many plant species are endemic and rare with incredible biodiversity. For the nature lover there are 3,500 invertibrates, 504 butterflies, 198 birds, 210 lichen and 800 fungi recorded as well as short-toed and shrill eagle, honey buzzard, black stork, wolf, lynx, bear and european bison.
The unique Stuzica virgin forest is situated under Kremenec (1221mt) the highest hill in the region. There is advanced skiing at Parihuzovce 14km from Snina and family skiing at Chlmec ski park 27km away. This is a larger venue with night skiing suitable for beginners. Further afield there are many ski resorts within travelling distance.
Zemplinske Hamre area
Zemplinske Hamre is a peaceful village situated at the head of a scenic valley overlooked by Sninsky kamen. Walking trails abound of varying lengths from the 20hour mountain ridge walk to one of 1.5 hours to Morske oko a beautiful glacial lake overlooked by Sninsky kamen which has an outstanding view in all directions. The area is also very suitable for cycling with six cycleways noted including part of the R61 from Poland to Ukraine.
There is fishing, swimming at Sninske rybnicky (5km), winter sports, cultural monuments and village and town festivals to see. Wooden churches are locally at Rusky Potok, Topola, Habova Roztoka and Ulicske Krive. A short distance away(2km) is the small town of Snina with shops, supermarkets, banks, post office and pleasant restaurants at very reasonable prices. There is the MIRO art gallery presenting Slovak and foreign artists just off the main square. In the summer there are often local bands playing for the public. Nereby in the National Park is Starina reservoir which provides drinking water for much of the region. This provides beautiful views and traces of abandoned villages.
The historic town of Humenne (26km) is also rich in cultural and sporting events. A favourite with visitors and locals alike is the skansen, an open air museum of historical old buildings including a wooden church. In the town is Humenne castle which is open for visitors and nereby are the ruins of medieval fortifications. Further afield one can visit the Andy Warhol museum at Medzalaborce, military museum at Svidnik and the historic medieval town of Bardejov. Spis castle on the road to Poprad is the largest in europe. Going south one can visit on the "Slovak sea" Zemplinska Sirava a popular local holiday destination near Michalovce.
To sum up, the area is highly attractive for people wanting to get away from it all and experiance a different culture with very reasonable prices. A paradise for lovers of outdoor activities, nature and history with the bonus of not being over developed. Without a doubt one of the hidden jewels of the new enlarged european community.
