The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Salzburgerland region
Zell am See lies in the Central Alps, south of Salzburg and east of Kitzbuel. The Dientener Berge mountains rise skyward from across the lake, but the really big stuff is to the south and east, in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Near Kaprun to the south is the 3000+ m Kitzsteinhorn with its glacier that provides all year round skiing. Even further to the south is the Grossglockner with its massive 3797m peaks.
Zell am See itself is a fascinating medieval town nestling on the west side of the lake. It is almost completely surrounded by mountains but still easily reached by mainline train or road. Zell am See and Kaprun have teamed up to create the large Zell am See/Kaprun skiing region which features glacier, down-hill, snow parks and gentle nursery slopes.
The area now offers 130 km of piste connected through 60 cable cars and chair lifts plus cross-country skiing tracks, winter and summer walking and cycling trails, Ice skating, mountain biking, paragliding and almost every other kind of outdoor activity which is probably why it has been named the Europasport-region.
Zell Am See / Zellermoos area
Winter fun is at its best on the Kitzsteinhorn (3,203m) and on the Schmittenhöhe (2,000m) with 130km of well-groomed slopes means fun for skiers and snowboarders.
60 uphill facilities take you to the most beautiful spots around Zell am See and Kaprun. All lifts can be used with one ski pass and the ski bus between Zell am See and Kaprun is included in the price.
Cross-country skiing is at its best with 200 km of well-groomed lower trails or on the high-alpine tracks of the Kitzsteinhorn (2,900m). There is also winter hiking tours, horseback riding in fresh snow, romantic horse-drawn carriage rides through the romantic winter countryside, sledding, paragliding, snow-shoe hiking tour and much more. When the Zeller See is frozen it offers the possibilities of ice-skating, ice hockey, ice curling, walks or cross-country skiing on the frozen lake.
Summer in Zell offers an enormous number of outdoor activities and opportunities.
Biking For many the ultimate vacation and leisure experience is genuin Mountains Biking. The Zell am See area offers hundreds of kilometers of graded mountain tracks to enjoy on two wheels. Specially selected mountain paths and track allows everyone to enjoy the woods, the mountain and nature in a very individual way – everyone at their own pace and style. Whether it is exciting mountain biking or relaxing, flat valley routes the Zillertal Arena really earns its reputation as a very special bike arena. Around 232 mountain bike kilometres of all levels of difficulty invite you to push your biking limits. In order to make it a bit easier for beginners the mountain railways will transport bikes at no extra cost. Bike rental is available at the main railway station and in spcialist sports shops.
How to get there
For those wishing to fly to Austria the closest and most popular airport is Salzburg and is about 100 km from Zell am See. There are frequent buses from the airport to the main railway station at Salzburg. From here trains can be taken to Zell am See. Buses also run from the airport direct to Zell am See. For those holiday makers that intend to hire a car while on holiday then Munich Airport is also a good option at about 140 km from Zell am See.
From the main railway station at Zell am See you should take the bus for Kaprun but ask to be let off at ‘Golf platz’ Bruckburg.
If you take a taxi from the station to apartment Hanne it should only cost 10 euro. This is probably a good idea if you are arriving laden with luggage and skis as you will be taken right to the door.

Message from the owners. We have received many compliments about apartment 'Hanne'. Please see below a copy of the latest (Aug 09) ---------------------------------------------- Roy,
Just a quick note to thank you for letting us stay in your apartment in Zell am See. The apartment is really nice and we had a very good holiday. It made a big difference having such a splendid view to come home to every evening and we ended up eating in on the balcony most nights! The weather was generally kind to us, and we enjoyed a number of the many things to do in the area. Also loved the Inspector Morse DVDs! As a Porsche nut it was quite something to be living a hundred yards from the Porsche family farm, the former Porsche hotel and close to Schloss Prielau.
Waldi was very friendly, welcoming and helpful and is definitely an asset to your rental process. Really enjoyed chatting to him. Everything was very clean and well prepared on arrival.
Hopefully we will have the chance to return at some point (I want to try the golf course!). In the meantime, I shall put some positive feedback on the website to help entice future customers.
Kind regards,
Gian
