The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Salzburgerland region
Just 5 mins or 1 ski bus stop is the cable car to take you up the Schmittenhöhe for superb views of the Zeller Lake and the Hohe Tauern National Park beyond.· There is just so much to do and see in this beautiful region.
From Zell Am See you can easily get to the Glemmtal resorts of Saalbach and Hinterglemm to the northwest, while the village of Kaprun to the south provides access to year-round glacier skiing below the Kitzsteinhorn . Also within reach there are two mountain reservoirs in the shadow of the Kitzsteinhorn Crossing the Hohe Tauern mountains to the south is the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse and another 'must see' is the stunning Krimml waterfalls.
Some other popular attractions in the local area are...
The medieval lakeside town of Zell am See has a very different atmosphere than most other Austrian ski resorts. Located on the waterfront surrounded by towering mountains and part of the Europa Sport Ski Region. Most of the centre of the ski resort of Zell am See is pedestrianised, creating an excellent environment and allowing you to easily work your way around the numerous après-ski bars, or visit the many shops in the ski resort.
For the skiers... With its multitude groomed trails, World Cup downhill, off-track runs, and glaciers, Zell Am See offers the complete Alps ski experience. Most of the best runs are accessed via the Schmittenhohe lifts. There is an outstanding network of intermediate trails, but experts can challenge themselves on the World Cup runs and a superb run down from the Kapellenlift summit. Nearby Kaprun, located 10 kilometers from Zell Am See, is famous for its high-altitude glacier skiing.
Reach the Alpin Centre via a cable car, or the Stanseilbahn tunnel route. Ski from there, or those with strong legs can go all the way to the 10,000-foot top station via aerial tram. The lake is also popular with water-sports enthusiasts, offering all sorts of activities for all the family, it's also perfect to swim in as the water is so clean it is drinking quality!
For the golfers... Impressive mountainpeaks, vast forests, gentle alpine pastures and in addition the vivid white glacier fields of Kitzsteinhorn: The nature backdrop of Zell am See´s 36 holes is simply breathtaking. No wonder that the famous british magazine "Golf Monthly" described the biggest golf course in the austrian alps as "one of the best 25 in Europe" and that the Golfclub Zell am See is member of the "Leading Golf Courses Austria".
The golf course consists of two 18-hole-Championship-courses "Schmittenhöhe" (6.218 m, Par 72 / SSS 72) and "Kitzsteinhorn" (6.146 m, Par 73 / SSS 72), which are embed in a flat, parklike terrain with biotopes and lakes. All just 3 mins walk!
For the walkers... There are endless mountain trails to be explored throughout summer. A walkers pass can be bought to allow you to take the summer lifts into the mountains. The walking routes are marked and dotted with little huts for you to stop along the route for a rest.
For the mountain bikers... Zell am See offers biking to suit all standards of cyclists. There are easy tours such as the route to Kaprun or you can choose the more strenuous trail towards Saalfelden.
The resort’s lift system allows you to take your bike up to more rugged mountain trails and for the experienced ‘downhillers’ a trip to the bike park in Leogang is a must.
Up for a challenge? Tackle the 2002 World Championship track - 8.2 kms long with a vertical drop of 295m!
Other activities... • white water rafting • canyoning • paragliding • windsurfing (on Lake Zell) • golf • horseriding • tennis • kayaking • massage
You can also relax on the lawns of the Zell lido with its beautiful swimming pool.
