The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Salzburgerland region
Take the cable car up the dramatic Schmittenhöhe for superb panoramas of the Salzburgerland and the Hohe Tauern National Park · Packed with activities - you'll never run out of things to do - Fun, lively and an excellent choice for families with children of all ages!
Zell am See is the quintessential Austrian resort, a compact town of picture-postcard perfection, with a lake on one side and an impressive mountain hinterland on the other. A skiing and hiking centre in its own right, Zell is also within easy striking distance of the Glemmtal resorts of Saalbach and Hinterglemm to the northwest, while the village of Kaprun to the south provides access to year-round glacier skiing below the Kitzsteinhorn . Other classic alpine excursions within reach are the two mountain reservoirs in the shadow of the Kitzsteinhorn, trips along the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse , which crosses the Hohe Tauern mountains to the south, and the magnificent Krimml waterfalls to the west.
Two folk traditions with which Zell is associated are the Krampusläufen on December 5, when folk wearing demonic masks take to the streets, and the Hogmoar wrestling competition, a 500-year-old trial of strength for local shepherds that takes place on midsummer's day near the summit of the 2117-metre Hundstein, which rises above the lake to the east.
The attractive lakeside town of Zell am See has a different feel to it than most Austrian ski destinations. Perhaps because of its size or its water front location, this is not the normal mountain village made up of a few dozen giant wooden chalets. Full of character and crammed with friendly cafés and bars, scenic Zell am See offers its visitors everything from the active to the more relaxing.
The slopes have a lot of variety and challenging terrain. A favourite among skiers are the slopes on the near by glacier of Kaprun. These are not to be missed. The lake is popular with water-sports enthusiasts, offering an excellent choice for those who enjoy sports and activities, it's also a fabulous setting for a swim. The village of Zell has a beautiful, historic centre with a bustling, pedestrianised area, perfect for browsing the variety of shops and pavement cafés.
Train service from Zell am See to Kitzbühel, Salzburg and Bad Gastein. Also an excellent local bus service and a choice of summer lifts.
There is a lovely walk around the lake at Zell - perhaps walk half way and take a boat back. Take the bus to Kaprun and follow valley paths along the riverside with wonderful views of the Hohe Tauern National Park mountains.
Take the summer lift from Zell am See up into the mountains, where you'll find a network of marked walking routes. A walkers' lift pass is available locally. There are also plenty of traditional mountain huts to stop in for refreshment along the way!
