The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Salzburgerland region
This is one of Austria's most beautiful regions with something to offer everyone all year round. Although most famous as a skiing area the region is extremely popular from spring through to autumn with those seeking fresh air and stunning countryside. The world famous Krimmel Waterfalls are nearby and resorts such as Kitzbuhel and Bad-Gastein are easily within reach. For city lovers Salzburg , the birth place of Mozart ,is just 80km away and offers great shopping with superb architecture and theatre.
Zell Am See area
Zell am See is a charming, bustling medieval town situated at the foot of the Schmittenhohe mountain, on the side of the lake. It is full of character with a traditional town square and pretty alley ways crammed with cafes and bars.
During the ski season the evenings are lively with a great apres-ski atmosphere and a wealth of choice for those seeking good food and entertainment. Zell am See is part of the Europa Sport region and your ski pass entitles you to ski here on the Schmittenhohe or at Kaprun, where the glacier on the Kitzsteinhorn offers all year round skiing. For those who like even more variety the vast ski region of Salbach and Hinterglemm is a 20 minute drive away.
During the spring and summer season the town changes; cafes start to spill out onto the pedestrianised streets and the place becomes filled with ramblers and cyclists. You can take a leisurely stroll around the town, walk or cycle around the lake or take the cable car up to the mountains to enjoy the stunning views and signposted pathways. You can swim in the lake or take advantage of one of the three outdoor swimming pools situated around the lake. There is also a ferry which runs from Zell am See across to the pretty village of Thumersbach and a tourist boat which gives guided tours around the lake.
There is plenty to keep you occupied within the town, however, Zell am See is also the perfect base from which to explore the local region. Small tour operators run daily exursions to all local points of interest, including Salzburg, Krimmel waterfalls and the nearby glacier 'Grossglockner'.
For those who play golf, there are 2 18-hole championship courses located in the valley between Zell and Kaprun.
