The Island of Gozo region
The climate is typically Mediterranean and is generally mild in winter. The average temperature for winter is 16 degrees Celsius and it covers the period between December and March. Summer is rather long, dry and sunny, with August being the warmest month. The average temperature for summer is 25 degrees Celsius and it covers the period between April and November.
Until now, pre-historic archaeological remains in the Maltese Islands date back to some 5000 B.C. and the oldest ones were discovered in Gozo. The Ggantija temples found in Xaghra, and other Neolithic temples date back to around 4100-2500 BC.
History starts with the Phoenicians, the famous Mediterranean traders from today's Lebanon who introduced cloth dyeing and maritime trade.
Their close relatives, the Carthaginians, superseded them and, after the three Punic Wars, our islands became part of the Roman Empire. The Roman era had also followed a brief period of Greek influence. Christianity was brought to Malta and Gozo in 60 A.D. by St. Paul, but was consolidated under the Byzantines, from the Eastern Roman Empire. Then the Arabs took control of the Maltese Islands.
The Normans re-established Christianity in Malta and Gozo in 1090. Then followed a period when the new masters of the Maltese islands came, in turn, from the aristocracy of Germany, France and Spain: the Swabians (1194); the Angouvins (1268); the Aragonese (1283) and finally, the Castilians (1410).
The period of the Knights of St. John commenced in 1530, and ended with the arrival of Napoleon in 1798. After the victory at the Great Siege of Malta of 1565, the Order of St. John decided to entrench itself in Malta. Under the leadership of Grandmaster Jean de La Vallette, the hero of the Great Siege, a new fortified capital city for Malta was built - Valletta. From this point onwards, the Maltese islands enjoyed 230 years of relative prosperity. This was a period of demographic expansion, while several villages took the status of towns and even cities. Baroque architecture and dominant coastal fortifications flourished to become permanent Maltese icons. Napoleon captured the Maltese Islands with unexpected ease in June 1798.
Under the Treaty of Paris (1814) Malta was confirmed as a British Possession. As steam replaced sail, Malta became an important coaling station, all the more so after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
In the Second World War (1939-45), that Malta was brought in the frontline of operations from where it played a strategic role. Gozo lacked targets of military importance and fared much better. Malta however, was continuously targeted by Axis air-raids and was nearly subdued by hunger and deprivation, had not the Santa Marija Convoy saved the day in 15th August 1942. Earlier on, on April 15th, King George VI awarded the George Cross Medal for the gallantry shown by the people of the Island Fortress of Malta. Independence was granted on 21st September 1964. Malta became a Republic in 1974. and joined the EU on May 1st 2004.

Review Title : 281098 - "Great base"
"Great property, really beautifully fitted out and well maintained. The layout means you can always escape and find a tranquil spot if you go in a group. Sleepy village which is still growing outwards near this property but protected courtyard pool, multiple terraces, generous living spaces and cool thick wall bedrooms means it is a fine retreat. Great places to eat and swim just down the hill and along the coast to the north east. "
Hi Jeff, “This villa exceeded expectations. The description didn't do it justice! It was a wonderful holiday home and the pool was great. There was sufficient space for us all and we enjoyed the local area. The property was clean and well maintained and clearly owned by people who have used self catering themselves as everything we needed was there. I would happily go there again and definitely recommend this property. Would strongly advise hiring a car. We hired a car reasonably from the airport and were able to visit lots of lovely beaches and travelled round most of Gozo on our stay. We only made it back to Malta for sightseeing on the way home!”
Just a quick note to say that we really enjoyed our stay in your house on Gozo. The house was lovely, even more so than the pictures led you to believe. It was in a great location for us and we were quite brave and walked down the road to Marsalforn to eat a couple of times and then back in the dark!!
Thanks again, we will recommend your house to our friends. Sue Winston
Dear Jeff and Mariella,
Thank you so very much for your really nice email, we did have a wonderful stay in your lovely farmhouse, really relaxing and very very comfortable, thank you. Everything worked out very well while we were in Gozo, it's such a magical place!!! Loved the Festa too!! We were impressed with **** car rentals too, Peter, our driver was great, completely on time and friendly. Thank you all so much for a really memorable holiday.
Thank you both once again, we would love to visit Gozo (and Malta) again, you come highly recommended.
Our Kind Regards, Best wishes and Thanks!
Carolyn & Alan Simms
Dear Jeff,
Thank you for your greetings. We are well back home and we enjoyed our stay in Gozo very much. People were very friendly, weather and beaches excellent. The water of the sea is very clear. As you supposed, the children liked it very much to hire a speedboat at Xlendi for half a day and we surounded Comino and we swam in the Blue Lagoon.
As we left, everybody of the family declared, that it was very nice and it will be likely that we will come back to Gozo in future
Special thanks for your welcome at the airport and the guide through the traffic. I always need to get used to a right steered car and to drive on the "wrong" side of the street.
Best wishes to you and your wife from Family Hahn Ummendorf
Hello Jeff,
We’re back at home and will said thank you for all.
It was one of the best holidays for us and we all remember your beautiful farmhouse and our time in it with a smile. We had a really great, but to short, time in Gozo and we’re sure, that we come back again in the next years.
Our little daughter do their first steps by the hands around the wonderful pool, get two new teeth in the last week and we’re happy to organise our holidays with you . Gozo and Malta are great places to be on earth and we’re a little bit sad, that these holidays end so fast.
I wrote our review in the web in this moment and i hope we hear you soon again in the next time.
All Best Regards from Berlin,
Thanks for all...
Robert + Family & Friends
Dear Jeff & Mariella, we are home again, what a pity!!! We enjoyed everything. First of all, your farmhouse. It is lovely, wonderful an hit the spot!! the weather, that you´ve ordered just for us and the perfect transfer service from **** car rental. Gozo was impressing, we enjoyed the flora, fauna and snorkeling. We agree about and hope ,that this was not the last time on Gozo. We shoot round about 1000 digital fotos. Here are some nice pictures. I´ll recommend Gozo and your farmhouse.
See you maybe next time. Yours sincerely Anja, Silke, Sabine, Ilka & Maja, Frauke & Raik & Joris
