The Island of Malta region
Malta is a Southern European country consisting of an archipelago situated in the centre of the Mediterranean, 80 km (50 mi) south of Sicily. Malta covers just over 316 km2 (122 sq mi) in land area, making it one of the world's smallest states. This allows for plenty of sightseeing without the long tiring drives in between the sites.
Throughout much of its history, Malta has been considered a crucial strategic location due in large part to its position in the Mediterranean Sea. It was held by several ancient cultures including Sicilians, Romans, Phoenicians, Byzantines and others. The island is commonly associated with the Knights of St. John who ruled it. This, along with the historic Biblical shipwreck of St. Paul on the island, ingrained the strong Roman Catholic legacy which is still the official and most practised religion in Malta today.
The country's official languages are Maltese and English, the latter a legacy from Malta's period as a British colony – the United Kingdom is the most recent outside ruling power. Malta gained independence in 1964 and joined the European Union in 2004. Malta is also party to the Schengen Agreement and in 2008 it became part of the eurozone.
Malta is internationally renowned as a tourist destination, with numerous recreational areas and historical monuments, including nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, most prominently the Megalithic Temples which are some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world.
Mgarr or Imgarr, formerly known as Mgiarro, is a small town in the northwest of the mainland of Malta. Mgarr is a typical rural village situated in an isolated region, west of Mosta. It is surrounded with rich farmland and vineyards. Many of its 3,014 inhabitants are farmers or are engaged in some sort of agricultural activity.
Mgarr has two important prehistoric sites: Ta' Hagrat, which is still in a good state of preservation, stands in a field near the village centre. Ta' Skorba, excavated in 1963, lies just outside the village and is situated 2 minutes walk from the apartment.
Mgarr's rustic environs embrace several rustic spots like Bingemma, Wardija, Fomm ir-Rih, Golden Bay, Riviera Bay and Gnejna Bay. Mgarr is a favourite stopping place for people strolling in its countryside and for those travelling in cars to the nearby beaches.
Every year, the Mgarr strawberry feast is held where more than 8 tons of strawberries are sold from the parish square, surrounded by joyous sounds of live Maltese folk music and traditional dancing.
