The Basque Country region

Along the Bay of Biscay lies a culture that stretches from the south of France to the north of Spain. It is upfront yet subtle, both ancient and new. Zarautz is placed in the heart of Basque Country.

Elegant cities such as San Sebastian and Biarritz invoke its glorious past when, in the 19th Century, Europe's aristocracy used to spend their summers on the Basque Coast. Zarautz has been recognized as a luxury tourist destination.

Visitors will enjoy not only first class cultural events and museums but also lively popular festivals in bucolic towns. Basque Country is a culinary paradise for gastronomy lovers, where the quality of the product is central. For nature and sports enthusiasts, Basque Country has a wide range of possibilities: surfing, diving, trekking or golfing in beautiful areas.

Zarautz

Zarautz is a great place to spend your holidays. it has a beautiful beach and is surrounded by mountains and the natural park of Pagoeta. You can visit local wineries, and taste the valiud txakoli wine, and cider bars.

Guetaria is a town next to Zarautz where you will have the chance to enjoy great seafood and fish meals in one of its numerous port restaurants. In Guetaria you will find a brand-new museum about Balenciaga, a fashion designer born in this town. We recomend you visit the Flysh route, an amazing excursion through some of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe. The cliffs are of international geological reference and are the main feature of the eight coastal kilometres between Deba and Zumaia, declared a Protected Biotope. Besides all that, you also have the San Sebastian Jazz and International Film Festivals and Bilbao´s Guggenheim and Fine Arts museums. There are a lot of possibilities, so let us help you find the perfect one for your holidays!

"OLD, DIRTY AND TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS"

We booked this villa for one week at a cost of 600 euros staying in September 2012. On arrival, it looked OK albeit a bit dismal with a mix of odd items of old furniture. On closer inspection, the flat was dirty with several of the pieces of furniture being broken or faulty in some way. There were exposed wires at sockets and a number of items which were advertised as luxuries were missing, namely dvd player and internet access. Every room had bulbs which were not working, one lamp did not work at all, the main door (only door of the flat) did not lock from inside or out and so we had to sleep the first night with a sofa propped behind the door. A cushion on the main bed had brown stains on it and when one of us lay on the double bed, it collapsed at one side onto the floor. The shower screen in the bathroom was dirty with a broken pane of glass which needed replacing. The window in the second bedroom does not open and the light shade on the ceiling in the same room is attached to the ceiling by exposed cables. Incredible !!! The flat was advertised on holidaylettings as having a dvd player, iron, barbecue and hairdryer (amongst other things), however, none of these items listed were in the flat. The advert also claims that the flat has a private garden which is misleading to say the least. Basically there is a very small decked area with a small wooden table and two chairs. There is nowhere to lie down or other usable space in the garden where e.g children could play or otherwise use the space. Having stayed in the flat one night and given all the issues listed, we contacted the owner the next day to express our disappointment and dissatisfaction. Unfortunately he was argumentative, condescending and tried to put the state of the flat down to "cultural differences". Having lived in Spain previously, I know this flat is not typical of the Spanish or Basque standard. Evenutually he refunded 400 euros and we moved out of the flat having only stayed one night. We then found a lovely casa rural in the hills outside Zarautz where we had a room for 40 euros per night and which also had a sitting room and kitchen which we could use and washing machine and iron. It was not modern or new but was comfortable and immaculately clean. Don't waste your time or money on this flat. We have uploaded a number of photos and they speak for themselves.
