The Ionian Islands region

Homer describes Zakynthos in the Illyad. During the era of Homer and the Trojan War, the island of Zakynthos formed part of the kingdom of Odysseus, king of Ithaca. Its founder was Zakynthos, son of Dardanos, King of Troy.

The modern historian P.Chiotis, having investigated the work of past historians, came to the conclusion that the settlers who went to Zakynthos were Arcadians town of Psophis and that Dardanos was of Arcadian origin but had migrated to Asia Minor. From there, his son went to Zakynthos, gave his name to the new city, and called its citadel Psophis.

Zakynthos is reachable by direct flights from the uk and other countries from May to November. You can also get there by taking the ferry from Killini on the mainland which takes about one and a half hours to Zante port. Smaller ferries can come from Korfu or kelelonia to Zakynthos and come to port Nicholas in the north, just 5 minutes drive from the villa. it can get very hot in the summer.

As the villa is in the hills there is a wonderful breeze at night. There are no mosquitoes in the hills which is wonderful and to be woken by the cycadas in the early morning and the evening is great!!!

Zakynthos / Port Nicolaos area

Port Nicholas is 5 minutes drive from the house. Here there are a number of restaurants, a petrol station, 2 supermarkets and ferries that can take you to see the blue caves, the ship wreak and the other islands. You can also hire boats from here to explore the hidden coves for the day. great for children.

Volimes is the closest town over the hills on the other side of the island, there are some great places to eat and you have to buy the local honey, rugs and pottery. The locals love to haggle prices so have fun with them!!

The Peligoni sailing club is on the road to the port. Here you can windsurf, sail and do many other water sports.
They have just built a new pool and have 2 restaurants you can eat in. You have to become a member and it is quite expensive!! Some of the local beaches are fantastic.

Alykes has a long sandy beach and is about 20 minutes down the coast in the car. More touristy.. but fun for a day away!!
